It is possible to get recharge kits for automobile air-conditioning units again. They were taken off the market due to regulations regarding ozone depleting gases, of which the refrigerant in use at the time, freon gas, was one.
Since then there have been developments in technology that allow the use of kits again, as the newly developed gases are not bad for the environment.
The snag with this idea is the cost:
About $60 for the kit, including two cans of refrigerant.
Then it needed more, so another two cans at $12 each, on special.
The thing worked, but has failed again, as the leak must be bigger than was originally there.
So, add a can of sealer at I think it was $15, and we have a total of $87.
Then it needed more refrigerant, so another two cans, still on special, total 24 bucks.
We are up to $11 plus 13% tax, and the darn thing has failed again.
It would have been cheaper to find a cheap backyard mechanic guy who can fix those things, and get it done properly in the first place.
So, before assuming your air conditioning just needs a top-up, get it checked for leaks, at the very least.
